Choosing art for the room you actually live in

Most advice about choosing art assumes a gallery: white walls, controlled light, nothing in the way. Your flat is not that. There is a radiator under the wall you like, the sun hits it at four in the afternoon, and you walk past it eleven times a day. All of that matters more than taste.

Scale, and the two-thirds rule

Above furniture, a print or a group should span roughly two-thirds of the width of whatever sits below it. Narrower than that and it looks stranded. On an empty wall, measure the space and fill about half its width. When in doubt, go one size up — the most common regret is a print that turned out too small, never too large.

Light decides the finish

A wall in direct sun will turn a glossy print into a mirror at exactly the hour you are in the room. Matte paper solves this: no reflection, no hotspot, and the colours stay readable from an angle. It is also why we print on a smooth 200gsm matte rather than anything with a sheen.

The room sets the mood, not the other way round

Hallways and stairwells take the loud pieces — you pass through quickly and a strong image earns its keep. Bedrooms want something quieter, and something you can look at half-asleep without being demanded of. Dining rooms can carry drama because you sit facing the wall for an hour at a time. Kitchens should get the print you do not mind cleaning.

Buy for the wall you actually pass

The honest test is not whether a piece is good. It is whether you want to see it every morning for three years. A print in the hallway will be looked at a thousand times more than one in the spare room. Put the piece you love where your life happens, and put the safe choice in the guest bedroom.
